Nov. 14, 2011: Nebraska and TransCanada Corp. reach a deal to find a new route for the stalled pipeline that would avoid environmentally sensitive lands.
Nov. 10, 2011: The U.S. State Dept. delays a final ruling until early 2013 - after the next presidential election - amid intense criticism of the project by environmental groups.
Nov. 10, 2011: Premier Alison Redford spends three days in Washington in talks with U.S. leaders on the future of oilsands development and the pipeline.
Nov. 7, 2011: In the largest pipeline demonstration to date, protesters surround the White House demanding Obama deny Trans Canada a permit to go ahead with the project.
Aug. 2011: 1,000 Anti-pipeline protesters are arrested over the course of a two-week sit-in at the White House.
April 6, 2011: US President Obama speaks publicly for the first time on the project with concerns about the potentially "destructive" nature of the oilsands and the need for answers before his administration decides whether to approve the project.
April 8, 2011: Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach writes a letter to the editor to the New York Times rebutting an editorial that urges blocking the pipeline.
March 14, 2008: Trans Canada Corp. receives formal approval from the U.S. State Department for the American portion of the Keystone pipeline.
Sept. 20, 2007: The National Energy Board approves the pipeline project.
